The Perfect Albania Itinerary: How to Plan Your Route

Albania packs beaches, mountains and UNESCO towns into a compact country — but the best route depends entirely on how long you have, which regions you want, and how you like to travel. This hub helps you choose the right plan, then points you to a detailed, day-by-day itinerary for it. Whether you’ve got a week or a fortnight, by car or by bus, there’s a route here for you.

Pick your itinerary fastOne week: 7 days in Albania — the south & centre – Ten days: 10 days in Albania — adds the northern Alps – Two weeks: 2 weeks in Albania — the whole country, relaxed – By region: southern · northernBy car: Albania road trip · Two countries: + Montenegro

How long do you need in Albania?

A good rule of thumb:

  • 5–7 days — focus on one region: the south (beaches + UNESCO towns) or the northern Alps. Trying to do both in a week means too much driving. Our 7-day itinerary covers the south and centre.
  • 10 days — the sweet spot to combine the south coast and the Alps. See the 10-day itinerary.
  • 2 weeks — the whole country at a relaxed pace, including the eastern lakes. See the 2-week itinerary.

Choose by region

If you’d rather go deep than wide, pick a region:

  • The south — the Riviera, Ksamil, the Blue Eye, Butrint and Gjirokastër; easy to reach via the Corfu ferry. → Southern Albania itinerary.
  • The north — Shkodër, the Lake Koman ferry, Valbona and Theth, the heart of the Albanian Alps. → Northern Albania itinerary.

Choose by travel style

  • Self-drive road trip — the most flexible way to see Albania; our road trip guide covers the route, driving conditions and costs.
  • Two-country trip — pair Albania with Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor and old towns. → Albania & Montenegro itinerary.
  • By bus — doable for the cities and the south’s main hubs, harder for the Riviera and the Alps (where an organised shuttle helps). See getting around.

When to go

For nearly every itinerary, the best windows are May–June and September–October — warm enough for the coast, with the Llogara Pass and the Alps open, and far fewer crowds than peak August. The Alps hiking season runs roughly June–October, so any route including Theth and Valbona must fall inside it. Full detail in our best time to visit guide.

A few planning rules of thumb

  • Don’t over-pack the map. One region done well beats the whole country rushed. Albania’s roads are slower than the distances suggest.
  • Rent a car for the coast, but leave it in Shkodër for the Alps — you can’t drive the Valbona–Theth pass.
  • Base for multiple nights where you can (Saranda for the south, a Riviera town for the coast) instead of changing hotels daily.
  • Book ahead in July–August, especially on the coast. See where to stay and trip costs.

Our quick recommendation

If it’s your first trip and you have 10 days, do the 10-day itinerary — it’s the best all-round introduction, combining the southern coast, the UNESCO towns and the Alps. Tight on time? The 7-day route. Plenty of time? The 2-week route.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need to visit Albania? Five to seven days for one region, about ten to combine the south coast and the northern Alps, and two weeks to see the whole country at a relaxed pace.

What is the best Albania itinerary for first-timers? The 10-day route is the best all-rounder, mixing the southern coast, the UNESCO towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, and the Albanian Alps. With only a week, focus on the south.

Should I do the north or the south of Albania? The south for beaches, ancient ruins and stone towns; the north for dramatic mountains and hiking. With 10+ days you can do both.

Is it better to see Albania by car or bus? A car is best for flexibility, especially on the coast. Buses and furgons work for cities and main routes, while the Alps are easiest via an organised ferry-and-shuttle package.

When is the best time to visit Albania? May–June or September–October for most routes; any itinerary including the Alps must fall within the roughly June–October hiking season.

Can I combine Albania with another country? Yes — Montenegro is the easiest add-on, sharing a border at Lake Skadar near Shkodër.
