Theth and the Albanian Alps: A Travel and Hiking Guide

Tucked into a green valley deep in the Accursed Mountains, Theth is the jewel of the Albanian Alps — a remote stone village of slate-roofed houses, waterfalls and a famous mountain pass that draws hikers from across the world. Once almost impossible to reach, Theth is now a short drive from Shkodër thanks to a new road, making the wild far north of Albania more accessible than ever. This guide covers what to see, the legendary Theth–Valbona hike, how to get there, and when to go.

Quick facts
Where: the Albanian Alps (Accursed Mountains), far northern Albania

Getting there: shuttle/minibus from Shkodër, ~€10–12, around 2–3 hours

Season: roughly June to October (largely closed in winter)

Why visit Theth

Theth sits inside the Alps of Albania National Park, ringed by dramatic limestone peaks the locals call the Bjeshkët e Nemuna — the “Accursed Mountains.” It’s a place of genuine wilderness and old mountain culture, yet it’s small and walkable, with family-run guesthouses serving hearty home-cooked food. Many travellers rush through on their way to the hike, but Theth itself, with its waterfalls, river and short day walks, is often a highlight of a whole Albania trip. It also has more going on than neighbouring Valbona, which makes it the better base if you’re choosing one.

Top things to do in Theth

The Theth Church. The village’s postcard image — a small 19th-century stone church standing alone in the valley against a backdrop of peaks. Don’t miss it at golden hour.

Grunas Waterfall. A pleasant short hike from the village leads to this 25-metre waterfall, a perfect leg-stretcher and a refreshing stop in summer.

The Blue Eye of Theth. Yes, Albania has two “Blue Eyes” — this northern one is a vivid blue-and-turquoise pool reached by a scenic (and fairly demanding) day hike from Theth, quite separate from the famous spring near Saranda. See our Blue Eye guide for the southern one.

The Lock-in Tower (Kulla). A preserved stone “blood-feud” tower where men once sheltered under the old code of besa — a striking window into northern Albania’s history.

Qafa e Pejës trail. A quieter day hike with mountain views that passes old communist-era bunkers, good as a warm-up or a rest-day walk.

The Theth–Valbona Pass hike

This is the reason many people come north. The hike over the Valbona Pass links Theth and Valbona across some of the most beautiful scenery in the Albanian Alps. It’s a point-to-point hike of about 6–8 hours one way, well-marked and doable independently or with a guide — though you should be reasonably fit, as there’s a sustained climb to the pass.

The trail can be walked in either direction, and which way is “best” is a friendly long-running debate:

  • Valbona → Theth gets the logistics out of the way first and ends in livelier Theth (there’s even a pub at the trail’s end).
  • Theth → Valbona lets you finish with the spectacular Lake Koman ferry as a reward.

Either way, the hike is one day but the whole trip takes 2–4 days once you factor in travel from Shkodër. The classic loop is Shkodër → Lake Koman ferry → Valbona → hike → Theth → Shkodër (or the reverse). For the boat leg, see our Lake Koman ferry guide.

A practical tip: leave your main luggage in Shkodër (most guesthouses store it) and carry only what you need for the trek.

How to get to Theth

Thanks to the new paved road, reaching Theth is now straightforward:

  • From Shkodër (the easy way): Shared shuttles and minibuses run from Shkodër most mornings, take about 2–3 hours, and cost roughly €10–12. Your guesthouse can arrange a pickup. You can also drive yourself.
  • Via the hike: Arrive in Valbona (reached by the Lake Koman ferry) and walk over the pass into Theth.

Wherever you start, Shkodër is the gateway to the entire Alps region — most travellers spend a night there before and after.

Best time to visit

The Alps season runs from roughly June to October, when the trails are open and clear days are more likely. Do not attempt the Valbona Pass outside this window — snow makes it dangerous, and the road and most guesthouses close for winter. July and August are the warmest and busiest; June and September offer a great balance of good weather and fewer people.

Where to stay

Theth is all about family-run guesthouses — clean, comfortable, and easily the best value, with generous home-cooked meals (and often local raki) included. The hosts are also your best resource for transport and hiking logistics. Book ahead in July and August, as the good places fill quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Theth to Valbona hike?
About 6–8 hours one way over the Valbona Pass. The hike itself is a single day, but the full trip takes 2–4 days including travel from Shkodër.

How do you get to Theth?
Most people take a shared shuttle or minibus from Shkodër — about 2–3 hours on the new road, for roughly €10–12. You can also drive, or arrive on foot via the hike from Valbona.

When is the best time to visit Theth?
June to October. July and August are busiest; June and September are quieter with good weather. The area largely closes in winter.

Do you need a guide for the Valbona Pass?
No — the trail is well-marked and many hike it independently. A guide is optional if you’d prefer company or extra security.

Is the Blue Eye in Theth the same as the famous one?
No. Theth has its own Blue Eye, a pool reached by a day hike in the north. The famous spring is the separate one near Saranda in the south.

Which is better, Theth or Valbona?
Both are stunning, but Theth has more to do and is easier to reach via the new road, so it’s the better base if you only choose one.
