The Lake Koman Ferry: How to Take Albania’s Most Scenic Boat Trip
If there’s one journey that turns up on every northern Albania itinerary, it’s the Lake Koman ferry. For about three hours, a boat winds through a flooded river canyon where sheer mountains drop straight into still, jade-green water — a landscape people regularly compare to the fjords of Norway or the rivers of Southeast Asia. It’s also the gateway to the Albanian Alps. This guide covers how the ferry works: the route, schedule, tickets, how to reach the port, and where to go next.
Quick facts
– Route: Koman (Komani) port → Fierzë, across Lake Koman in northern Albania
– Duration: about 2.5–3 hours
– Main operators: Berisha (most popular), Alpin, Rozafa
– Season: roughly mid-April to early November
– Ticket: around €10 per person (vehicles extra); book ahead in summer
– Typical Berisha departure: ~9:00 am from Koman, arriving Fierzë ~11:30 am
What is the Lake Koman ferry?
Lake Koman is a reservoir on the Drin River, hemmed in by steep gorges in the mountains of northern Albania. The ferry that crosses it has become one of the country’s signature experiences — a slow, spectacular cruise past cliffs, tiny shoreline hamlets and water so still it mirrors the peaks. The big car ferries have indoor seating and upper decks for the best views, and most sell coffee and snacks on board.
For most travellers the ferry isn’t just a sightseeing trip — it’s a vital link in the classic northern loop: Shkodër → Koman → ferry → Fierzë → Valbona → hike to Theth → back to Shkodër. Even if you’re not hiking, the crossing is worth doing for the scenery alone.
The route, schedule and operators
The standard crossing runs from Koman port to Fierzë and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Several companies operate the route, each with its own boats, times and prices — the three main ones are Berisha, Alpin and Rozafa. Berisha is the most popular and the one most backpackers use.
A typical Berisha timetable runs the ferry from Koman at around 9:00 am, arriving in Fierzë around 11:30 am, with the return from Fierzë at about 1:00 pm. The ferry season runs roughly from mid-April to early November.
One important caveat: departure times shift with the season and by operator. Always confirm the current schedule on the operator’s website (or through your guesthouse) before you plan your day around it.
Tickets and prices
As a rough guide, a passenger ticket costs around €10 (Berisha is often a little cheaper if you book online in advance; Alpin tends to be pricier). If you’re bringing a vehicle, you pay extra — typically charged per square metre, so a car adds meaningfully to the cost. Berisha lets you pay online by card or PayPal.
In July and August the popular boats fill up, so book a few days ahead — and definitely in advance if you’re taking a car or campervan, as vehicle space is limited.
How to get to Koman port
The port at Koman is remote, and the morning ferry leaves early, so plan your arrival the day before or take a timed transfer.
- From Shkodër: This is the usual starting point. Minibuses (furgons) leave early — around 6:15–7:00 am — and take roughly 2–2.5 hours to reach the port (about 800 LEK). The drive passes through the famously narrow Komani tunnel.
- Operator shuttles: Berisha and others run scheduled minivan transfers from Shkodër (and Tirana) timed to connect with the ferry, which removes the guesswork — you can book the transfer and ferry together.
- From Tirana: Possible as a very long day or with an organised tour, but most people base themselves in Shkodër the night before.
Onward from Fierzë to Valbona
There’s little to do in Fierzë itself, so most travellers head straight on to Valbona, about a 30-minute drive away. A Berisha minibus typically meets the ferry (around midday, ~€8 per person); if it’s not running, a taxi costs in the region of €20. Fierzë is also about 30 minutes north of Bajram Curri, where you can change for other eastern destinations.
Bringing a car — or just doing the round trip
You can take a car, motorbike or bicycle on board (book the space ahead in summer). Note, though, that you cannot drive between Valbona and Theth — the classic route there is the hiking trail, so many people do the ferry without a car and use minibuses and taxis at each end.
If you only want to experience the lake and aren’t continuing into the Alps, you can take the morning ferry out and return on the afternoon boat the same day — around six hours on the water in total.
The Shala River add-on
Many visitors combine the lake with the Shala River, a strikingly turquoise side-arm of the same reservoir, sometimes called “the Thailand of Albania.” It’s reached by boat from the Koman area and is usually done as a separate day trip rather than as part of the Koman→Fierzë crossing — worth knowing if you’re choosing between the two.
Best time to take the ferry
The ferry runs from roughly mid-April to early November. Summer brings the most reliable weather but also the biggest crowds and the need to book ahead. Late spring (May–June) and September are the sweet spots — good conditions, fewer people. Whenever you go, mornings on the water are chilly, so bring a layer.
A few practical tips
- Confirm the current schedule before you travel — times change seasonally.
- Book ahead in July–August, especially with a vehicle.
- Bring cash for transfers and snacks, plus a warm layer for the morning.
- Grab a spot on the upper deck for the best views.
